Earth Day 2026

Earth Day - cleaning the park

EARTH DAY 2026

The beautiful sun shone down on Malherbe International School for our Earth Day 2026!

The students were placed in mixed-age groups and visited various workshops carefully prepared by our inventive teachers.

Our primary classes learnt the basics of the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. They created their own recycling symbol and learnt how recycling paper, plastic, glass and metal reduces pollution and keeps the Earth clean.

With Mr. Donohue, the children pondered and discussed our role in protecting the planet and our connection to the environment.

Mr. Finlay brought out his gardening gloves and supervised the planting of the school flower boxes with beautiful annuals. The children learnt the basics of the No Till method which proves beneficial in disturbing the soil less during planting and helps to retain the soil’s moisture after a rain or watering.

Everyday gestures are easy to fit into our daily routines so that we can all contribute to the care of our planet. Ms Hooton’s group used drawing and writing mediums to demonstrate this.

In pre-primary, Miss Patricia’s focus was on the sea. Keeping the oceans clean is especially necessary for the sea turtle’s reproduction and survival. The children loved the emphasis placed on this sea creature’s birth, surviving the perilous journey from his egg with all of the dangers that he encounters.

Miss Anne-Cécile demonstrated how we must all take a bit of extra time to sort our rubbish in the correct recycling bins: glass, tin, paper, and green – it is so easy to learn these separating essentials!

Miss Marie explained the importance of bees for our planet. She made pretend bees out of beautiful coloured paper with pegs and pom-poms to show the children how the bee spreads pollen to help the flowers grow.

Mr. Mark used empty recycling plastics and other materials to print nature paintings.

At the end of the day, our primary students patrolled the neighbourhood to collect litter from the nearby parks, helping to keep our environment clean.

The day culminated with a construction project whereby our primary students used recycled wood pallets to build a mud kitchen which will be used by their younger schoolmates in nursery and pre-primary.

It was a wonderful, productive, interesting learning day for all! Children big and small can make a difference with everyday care and understanding of how we can participate in the care of precious planet Earth.
